vessel not under command, Glazed Stoneware digitally extruded 3D Printed 'vessels', 2022

'vessel not under command', is a selected body of ceramic 3D printed work that is unified by their externally perceived 'failings', physical glitches left behind by the printer. Shifting the narrative of what we consider failure in art-making, their title plays on the notion that these vessels, despite depicting such objects as bottles and containers, hold no capability in retaining liquid; arguably the primary function of a vessel. A play on words, 'vessel not under command' is also a term used in Ship Navigation, whereby a vessel which, through some exceptional circumstance, is unable to manoeuvre as required by these Rules. Mirroring the navigation pathways during the 3D printing process, demonstrating the necessity in relinquishing control over final outcomes.
